PALM Invests in the future of sustainable packaging solutions: New corrugated board plant in Alzenau start production

With the construction of a state-of-the-art corrugated board plant in Alzenau, PALM is investing €200 million in the future of its Packaging division, creating the foundations for even greater performance, efficiency and security of supply for its customers. The new Wellpappe Alzenau facility replaces the existing sites in Alzenau and Hasselroth, consolidating production capacities at a future-oriented location. Following the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2024, the new plant has been operational since the end of May 2026.

“By building this new facility, we are not only creating one of the most modern corrugated board plants in Europe, but also bringing together our expertise at a single location and laying the foundations for an even more efficient and sustainable future,” says Jens Schuhmacher, Managing Director of Wellpappe Alzenau.

Covering an area of 140,000 square metres, the highly automated production facility is dedicated to the manufacture of sustainable corrugated packaging solutions. Cutting-edge machinery, digitalised processes and two fully automated high-bay warehouses ensure maximum efficiency throughout the entire value chain. The generously sized finished goods warehouse enables fast, reliable and flexible deliveries to customers, while the intermediate goods warehouse further enhances productivity and process stability.

With this investment, PALM is strengthening its ability to provide customers with high-quality, sustainable packaging solutions over the long term. “Alzenau is an important location for PALM with significant potential. This investment creates the conditions for further sustainable growth, strengthens the regional economy and demonstrates our clear commitment to the future of industry in Germany,” explains Dr Marina Palm, CEO of the PALM Group.

Sustainability is a key element of the project. A large-scale photovoltaic system generates renewable electricity directly on site. The charging infrastructure has already been designed to support electric passenger cars and heavy goods vehicles. This enables Wellpappe Alzenau’s seven electric lorries to be charged directly at the facility before setting off on low-emission deliveries to customers. In addition, the steam boiler installed at the plant has already been prepared for future operation using green hydrogen.

The new facility is a clear expression of PALM’s long-term growth strategy. As a family-owned company with more than 150 years of history, PALM is one of the leading companies in the European paper and packaging industry. With 33 corrugated board plants across Europe and a consistent commitment to the circular economy, PALM develops innovative packaging solutions for customers from a wide range of industries. The commissioning of the new Alzenau plant marks another important milestone on the path towards a high-performance, sustainable and future-proof packaging production.
