Your education 

  • You will be assessed through exams for the theoretical side and an end point assessment for the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are learnt within the mill.

Location

  • Catch College near Grimsby (accommodation and travel provided)
  • Production Department at Palm Paper, King’s Lynn

Reporting to 

 Compliance Manager or Appointed Mentor

Contract length and qualification 

  • Typically 3 years
  •  27 teaching weeks, 1-2 week blocks online or on site     
  • After successful completion you will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Process Technology combined with Level 2 and Level 3 Certificates in Paper Technology and could be working in a Production positon at Palm Paper.

 

About you:

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn new subjects and apply this to the work place
  • Well organised and motivated to independent studies
  • English, Maths and Science GCSE grade 9-4 / A*-C
  • Good IT Skills, in particular MS Office applications
  • Responsible and accountable 

Responsibilities:

Actively participate in the daily operation of the paper mill, learning and getting involved in the operational and control of a variety of different processes onsite, including:

  • Cleaning of recycled paper so it can be made into new paper
  • Paper machine operation 
  • Finished paper processing
  • Automatic wrapping line operation
  • Fresh water and effluent treatment plant 
  • Combined Heat and Power plant operation
  • Onsite chemical systems 
  • Laboratory - quality control  and paper property analysis
  • Basic mechanical experience

Areas studied at college:

  • Health, safety and environmental issues in process industries
  • Instrumentation, measurement and control
  • Fundamentals of communications and information technology
  • Science of papermaking 
  • Chemical additives in paper manufacture
  • Processing recycled fibres 
  • Wet and dry end process in paper making

Additional training:

  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Driving forklift truck, cherry picker, shovel loader
  • Operation of overhead cranes and hoists
  • Safety training

Further education/development

There is scope within the role to expand and develop personally with additional training through higher national qualifications, degrees or on specific subject matter
