Your education 

  • To be trained in all technical aspects of the mechanical maintenance processes and complete the apprenticeship programme in accordance with the college and national requirements.

Location

  • College of West Anglia, King’s Lynn (Day release, once week) 
  • Electrical Department at Palm Paper, King’s Lynn (4 days per week) 

Reporting to 

 Training Supervisor Engineering or Appointed Mentor 

Contract length and qualification 

  • 3 years
  • After successfully completing the apprenticeship, you will qualify with a Level 3 Certificate in Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician and will be become a Junior Engineer at Palm Paper.

 

About you:

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Willingness to learn new subjects and apply this to the work place
  • Well organised and motivated to independent studies
  • English, Maths and Science GCSE grade 9-4 / A*-C
  • Good IT Skills, in particular MS Office applications
  • Responsible and accountable
  • Interest in mechanical theory and practical application

Responsibilities:

Participate in daily operations in the mill, planned preventative and reactive maintenance of machinery and equipment, including:

  • Pumps changes and overhauls
  • Agitators
  • 100 tonne roll changes
  • Lubrication, hydraulic and pneumatic systems 
  • Site vehicle maintenance – Fork lift truck, shovel loaders
  • Chillers
  • Air compressors
  • Laser alignment
  • Welding
  • Lifting and slinging 
  • Condition monitoring - vibration analysis

Areas studied at college:

  • Turning
  • Milling
  • Welding
  • Maintenance of Pumps
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics

Additional training:

  • Use of hand and power tools
  • Workshop machinery
  • Understanding and reading technical drawings
  • Driving forklift trucks and shovel loaders 
  • Operation of overhead cranes and hoists
  • How to work safely and safety laws

Further education/development

Following successful completion of a mechanical competency skill set in year 4 at the mill, you could be promoted to a Mechanical Engineer. 

There is scope within the role to expand and develop personally with additional training through higher national qualifications, degrees or on specific subject matter.
